Brave dog survives in desert for SIX days after pet carrier falls from plane onto runway
Gaspar, a Dachshund, was due to fly on an internal flight in Chile when he went missing and fled into the desert.
A hardy dog survived alone in the desert for six days after it broke free from a pet carrier which fell from a plane.
Gaspar, a two-year-old Dachshund, was travelling with owner Janis Cavieres’s best friend Ligia Gallardo on an internal flight in Chile.
Gallardo was flying ahead of Cavieres in the northern Chilean city of Iquique following an internal flight from capital Santiago.
Gaspar travelled with Gallardo inside a pet carrier in the plane’s cargo hold.
However, upon landing the dog owner’s friend was stunned when she collected an empty pet carrier at the airport.
Officials reportedly told her that there had been an accident and that the dog had escaped into the nearby Atacama Desert.
According to Cavieres, the carrier had fallen from the stationary plane’s hold and broke open upon impact. The scared pooch then ran off.
Cavieres organised a search operation on social media to try and track down Gaspar.
Acording to local media, the dog had been spotted in the desert several times but could not be caught.
The airline and a local army unit reportedly provided vehicles and personnel to help in the search and the animal was finally retrieved.
